Not for the Kids

Every language has its share of colorful expressions, and Hindi is no exception. You might well hear them, but there's no need to go around saying them, unless you want to be that weird foreigner who goes around swearing all the time in a bad accent. Everyone knows one of those.

Calling someone a dog isn't a nice thing, and calling him a कुत्ता is even worse. Conveniently enough, the female कुत्ती works just as well for females, much like the word for a female dog in English. Donkeys are also candidates for name-calling, being गधा and गधी. The in-laws get enough grief, and they don't get any relief in Hindi, because साला and साली also make fine terms of abuse. Any insult can be made all the more biting by adding कहीं का or कहीं की, because the only thing worse than being something bad is being something bad from somewhere. Another good intensifier is कमीना or कमीनी, which means "base" or "low," which can also be tacked right onto the insult of your choice.

Try not to get yourself into trouble with these words, ok?
